But Living in Mexico
You're Quick Wow, Mexico we are all over the place today. Brazil awesome well. Thank you all for joining us today again. My name is Tiffany Jackson. I am basis and director of missions here at that Upper School of Business as you might have noticed as you were putting your location into the chat box. It didn't pop up right away and just so you're aware is a moderated chat so today. I was speaking you can put your questions in there and we will make sure we get as many of them as possible today.
But again we are very excited to have you. Thank you for joining us. The first thing we're going to do today? Is introduce you to our student panel so we're going to have them go around the room and say who they are, and what year they in an maybe? What country you guys are from as well so we can kind of ketav him Pedro for us from Brazil. I'm MBA class of 2020.
Hi I'm Carol Ina I'm from Colombia and I'm also class of 2020 hello. When I'm Jerry Richter. I'm from Peru and also class of 2020 hello. Everyone I am young Carlo Borja Siam from Peru. I am Class 2021.
Everyone I am I am from Mexico Class Twenty Twenty twenty one. Thank you guys so much and so the purpose of today's webinars to help you understand the distinct benefits of that ever NBA curriculum in the diverse community by hearing directly from our current students so as we mentioned today. We are focusing our Latin American population and I'm excited to have our currency is here today. They are all very involved in our program and excited to share their insight with you before we get there. The first thing I'm going to talk to you about is.
Really this dramatic transformation of business that's happening due to the exponential leaps in technology. We've been experiencing so think about driverless cars. And Apple Pay in Bitcoin also consider the amount of data that's being produced with that. It's a massive amount and there's really no denying that the landscape of business has changed dramatically and one thing is for certain it's going to continue to do so, so that Upper School is uniquely positioned to help you take advantage of this opportunity and we train our students to lead at this intersection of business and technology.
So I'm going to talk to you guys a little bit about how we do that.
So as you see here leadership and analytics are really, really important parts of our curriculum and it wasn't all that long ago that our perspective. Students were in your shoes thinking about the NBA and research programs that they want to attend so Gerry? Why don't you kick it of- by sharing some insight on how you believe the focus on leadership and analytics helps our Tepper students stand apart and more specifically how is temper help you enhance the skills but in my opinion those are the 2 main features that prepares you for your future jobs.
I'm talking about right the next one after graduation, and the one you're going to have in 510. Twenty 30 years. Maybe uh start with Analytics. Nowadays, like the world is very based on data and a lot of people don't know how to do the data and for example, during my summer. I had to process a lot of information and there was an analytics specialist. Analytics person in my team.
But he was not always available, so for me to be able to grab some data and come up to insights on that without needing without his need of helping me.
And regard either ship, the accelerate centered at this hour leadership center here temporary was the main reason for me to come to the school being able to lead teams inefficient way different kind of things I performer teens big teams moldings. Effing my main goal during this MBA and we also have a lot of leadership opportunities here in temper during this 2 year MBA adventure.
Hey, where you can test all those things that you learn at this idea celery center just to add on. That's Pedro here. It's amazing how stepper is able to include data analytics in different aspects of the of the business is so you can talk about marketing and finance or anything like that. In any case, that includes data analytics into the aspect and it's amazing how that is able to help us in our jobs in the future and it was very helpful for us during the summer internship.
I have an example about that, so this is Carol Ina. I remembered that I took one class. I love marketing and I took 1 cloud that was called that is called marketing research and I was expecting to do like service and things like that, and it was something that I was not expecting at all. It was like analyzing data and statistics on coming up with the with the customers that we, we need to focus on an all based on data and numbers an?
Analysis so I really liked it because it's a class that I took when I was in undergrad and it was like surveys like going to people and actually asking them questions. But these class was like after that, what happens? What do you do with that data and what insights you get from that?
Excellent thank you so much for that insight that definitely highlights how leadership in Analytics. Can really help you hit another team that's a really huge part of our academic experience is the Masters Career Center and so they'll work with you for both your internship in your full-time recruitment process will work with you through that entire time. So Carolina can you speak to your involvement with the Masters Career Center in terms of your job search preparation and how did the MCC support you in achieving your internship in impossible your postman vehicles?
Before coming to temper I had contact with the MCC because I was participating with Forte that it will talk about it later but uh. I went to one of their sessions where they were going to have a lot of companies doing like recruiting sessions and coming from Latin America or recruiting is very different than how like American companies recruit so I had no idea about this my resume was disaster like.
Uh when I showed it to Sophia. She's my counselor, she changed completely an and we made a very good friendship out of that I trust her a lot and it became like my mentor and she really helps me and guide me to get what I want and how to how to prepare for that. So the MCC I think is one of the great resources. Stepper has its own you to go to them and to ask for their opinion. But if you do you'll get a lot of?
Good insights from them so for my internship seek like Sophia. Help me perhaps we did with it. Some of like mock interviews. We prepped our story stories. She helped me with my resume my cover letter. My applications all of this. I got my internship at Microsoft and then I got a full time offers but after that, even though I wasn't recruiting for a for another full time offer. I was working with her on how to negotiate my offer and get the best deal.
So the empty season not an excellent resource that Tipper has.
And to sum up that as people from Latin America, where the recurring parties, so different from the USS having the resources of the MCC is really helpful because they guide you through the through all the aspects that you need to know in order to get a successful recruiting process as part of the resume as well as the interviews are super important but they also provide you guidance on how to interact with people in the recursively companies that it's.
Also something important in the recruiting part.
I I just want to have uh I would like to mention that you have some mandatory meetings with the MTC consular but you can save some additional meetings. If you need a As you can as many as you can you can set in some meetings based on your availability?
Thank you guys for that insight and so one of Peppers values diversity of thought because we believe a diverse community creates a richer and more robust learning environment. Some Pedro can you share? How do you believe that upper school fosters an inclusive community? Yeah, sure I mean that is diverse in every aspect but the aspect of fascinates me the most is how the diversity of backgrounds brought here.
I mean, it's amazing how you know, we had colleagues from every kind of back for all kinds of backgrounds. I mean, we have people from computer science or finance for monitoring and separate really makes us interact with each other. You know each class that we take we it's not about just you know, OK, you will be with people from your own background, the class is really made.
We interact with each other. You know that we have different kinds of backgrounds different kind of fat and it's amazing how that can help you grow academically and professionally so.
Yeah, I think that is amazing that way.
You also see during during this whole experience that the diversity and inclusion is not only about doing something that we feel is right, you realize here that having diverse team and and teams where everyone feels included leads up to better results an?
For me, it wasn't that clear before the NBA to be honest.
Well, in one other way we do it is through clubs here, you know, we really provide a rich opportunity for leadership in growth outside the classroom and I know many of you are involved in multiple clubs. But I definitely want to start discussions. Today, talking about some of the activities of the LHC. The Latin American business club. Carlo can you tell us how the LHC support student here at tougher? Yes, of course, it well the first time that I come to temper I was very AI feel.
We're here because I is a different environment that I have improved so I think that the best thing, that I could have here was that L ABC because they help me to adapt easily to the community. They understand me better becaus they we are.
We come from a similar culture and I think that the different events that we have and they can tell us about their experience in the first year we can know more about how to face the different challenges that we have in the first year so that helped me a lot and also we have assigned a mentor in the LBC help us for each different stage of our recruitment process and so for any.
Any doubt that we can have about academic academic issues. So I think that that Lady was very useful. For every every letting America on guys are here. I want to add to that, so talking about leadership and the L ABC. For example, Jerry here is the president of the LABCD officer of the admissions officer. So it's another way of getting involved in leadership and we try as much to have these kind of events to have a mentor to make sure that the people that are coming in.
Have a good experience and we're doing that because when I came to temper it. That's what I got so I got a person who called me and who was helping me look for my apartment here for example, like I had no idea which kind of apt I should get, how much would it cost? What extras did did I have to pay the electricity or water or like sewerage like all of that, so having someone here that can help you on can guide you through all that process.
Is very useful and that's what we try to do with the L ABC? Thank you for that.
All right and I want to make sure you guys are familiar with some of our diversity partners. Uhm and I know we have carolena who was just speaking, she's actually also involved in Forte, which is an organization that we work with that promotes women leading in the business world, so can you share some of the benefits and opportunities you've gained through for tight so Unfortunately, I heard about 4:00 to when I had already applied on when I was accepted to to temper but I've heard that they had they have a great program that is.
NBA launch that helps you prep for the application process and all of that, so it's great. If you're starting to apply look for that. But with four to my Contacts. I went to one of their conferences. It was in Atlanta. It was a leadership conference. I loved it, I made a lot of great women there. I'm still in touch with a lot of them and they had like a private event with companies so we could recruit.
I got one interview from that, so it's a great partner and it's a great thing to look at if you're a woman you're applying don't forget to look for that. Thank you for that. We also have a few other diversity partners include along with Forte so the consortium is primarily for underrepresented minority population students, which is a great organization as well. That does NBA prep military NBA for those of you who have been in active duty or reserved.
MLT is management leaders of tomorrow. It's another organization that spreadsheet for the NBA and then reaching out for LGBT queue students. An allies so if you're interested in any of those diversity partners. Please either reach out to us reach out to those partners directly.
I want to shoot switch gears, though into uh? How do you guys talk a little bit about Pittsburgh while we're getting going through some of the details about Pittsburgh? Why don't you guys start putting some of your questions into the chat box as I mentioned it is a moderated chat so you might not see them right away. But we want to answer as many as possible. When we get to our Q&A section so feel free to start putting those in there, but I want to start talking about your transition to Pittsburgh and how you taking advantage of the city of this so can you please share with us kind of?
Some details about your transition to petsburgh sure when I came here. I came from Mexico City. That is really crowded city and transitioning to hear that it's a really good city with no traffic and that it's really affordable was really good come to the NBA because not only do they rent fee is affordable. Also, a public transportation? Is included in the idea that is something important, and people.
The program, leaving almost all of them, leaving shady side that it's a neighborhood near from the school and that allows us to build a closed community with the school and also you can have in the city amusement activities, like at the football games or the people games that make also the light duty here.
Excellent excellent it, I know all of you come from other countries, so can you share your transition or share some details about your transition to the USN? How Tepper specifically helped you with that transition.
Have for me coming to the years was much easier than expected to be honest. I was a little bit worried and scared before getting here. But as soon as I landed everything went smoothly. I got my appointment today. I got here. The next day already had my pepper ID. I have the bank account. I had that for a SIM card my wife. I was going to get installed in a couple of days so in in less than well. My laptop did took a little while to get here. But in less than 3 days. I was also tapped.
To start focusing on on the NBA the process was pretty pretty simple life again. Well, like Catalina said. I got a lot of support of the second years that year.
Actually, your apartment was the 2nd year that was moving out at them, leaving now in an apartment that was from a second year was moving out so if anyone wants to come and I'm graduating soon.
It in my face AA is the first time that I live outside of Peru of Lima. So the adaptation was very easy be cause temporary. Give me some guidelines that I need to follow to adapt easily for example, in where I can find some restaurants where I can find so, so places to go where I can where I need to go to create my bank account and different advice that I received.
The second years, they they also helped me a lot to to make easy. These transitions and as Gary mentioned. I also I am living in a place where 2 Peruvians were living in.

How is Pittsburgh for a family?

Pablo Cazares - Mexico
Awesome awesome, so we are going to transition then into our panel where we're going to open it up for questions and surprisingly our first one, is how is Pittsburgh for family. So Jerry mentioned you by your wife with you if anybody else wants their babies and details about their families and how they transition to the Pittsburgh city well in the early BC. We have several several people who came with with wife or husband.
A to the city and their different experiences that once with kids uh. I think there are a lot of activities here in town to do it with a little kid the ones that are a little bit older already going to preschool or or something like that, and yeah well. There's also the partners clapping pepper were partners get a lot of activities to do, and some of them start to work too, and I think it's.
Like mentioned before it's a really quiet and calm fitted. But with also with interesting things. It's a very, very simple city so there's a lot to do and it feels very safe. Yeah, I mean, we do have a lot of classmates who brought their families here. I see that I do not.
I have a family here, but I see that they have you know a lot of interaction. They they always have showed up with each other so you know that I think it helps a lot to you know, even if your partner is not here in school, so it's outside so they kind of help each other. They all like interacting so I think.
And there are a lot of different neighborhoods from for example, shady side might be more for like students to go like to the bar things. But if you want something we have a friend that she lives with her husband in Lawrenceville. That is another very cool neighborhood that has a lot of restaurants and a lot of bars and things like that. But there are other neighborhoods that are like more familiar like more for kids have more parks and things like that, so it depends where you're living but definitely Tepper has.
Oh clubs to help with that and so the partners club was Jerry mentioned and the parents club so those 2 clubs will help a lot with that.
As a great question keep the great questions rolling in next. We're going to answer is if you guys can go around the table and share one piece of advice for an incoming student temper.
Take your take your time and think about that one, but I would advise you to first reach out to us. We're here to help you we want you to succeed. We want you to be happy coming here so reach out to us we that's what we're doing in the LABC and 2nd. Enjoy your time off before you come to temper don't work until the last day I didn't do it and I love that I had a lot of fun. I I was able to be with my family to travel.
Like if you are able to do something like that I highly recommend it.
I I think that uh the pieces of advice that I can give is uh the time goes really fast. So it's the best thing, that you can do is like try to take advantage of all the resources in here and I think that having people that allows you to have some guidance on how to better take advantage of the resources as soon as we start the program is great because you can focus on what you really want and you can.
Discover plenty of opportunities that that that that paper provides you.
Be honest on your application because it doesn't turn back when we have a lot of diverse backgrounds. And if you're being honest. You are going to be much more passionate about your answers and that shows up, then passion is the most important thing for me during the NBA pattern for doing the right things and doing them well and it applies also for recruiting after you get here so.
Yeah, I would say uh least the most important things that you want to take from your MBA and make sure that you know when you choosing a school that school will be able to provide what we really need to accomplish those goals. I said that this is something that I've done before coming here it's very helpful. When I'm still doing it today. So yeah, it's a good device.
Take an MBA is a big step in your career, so don't be afraid a apply because this is a great program.
You are going to think in after taking the parental it worked.
Thank you guys are here here is a good one do you guys have any ways or any upcoming events in the near future? Where our perspective students can connect me well in the case of Peru.
