Hi everyone, welcome to today's webinar an if you wouldn't mind texting in the chat box that you can hear me that would be great before we get started.
And also tell me where you're logging in from.
Friend couple people all over New York here in Pitts Burg Atlanta. Oh, even India. Thank you for staying up pretty late.
Great thank you so again. Um thanks again for joining us for today's discovered the difference. Women women web and R. I'm Gina Chick Hattian, I have 4 of our second year students with us today. And, please, you know, let's have a quick round of introductions and you know whether.
But yeah, if you had an internship and you know, kind of what brought you here to temper as well.
Nikita before taper I'm not very common junior I bought this assistant district junior and ran my own mining business. I came to temper in the mindset of moving back to the technology field. Antipatica analytical school. It was one of my first choices during summer intern as a strategy and business planning intern at Electronic Arts. EA and I'll be happy to answer any questions, you guys have today.
Great I'm Giovanna Chevelle, I recently heard hailing from Boston. My background is in civil engineering and I worked in the energy space prior to temper and this summer. I worked in renewable energy finance, which is really fun and kind of different my previous experience excited to be here today, an answer any questions.
Great I am Natasha before coming to temper I was a teacher with teach for America's teaching 10th grade geometry and coming to temper. I think the best the biggest investing for me where the people. I think there's an incredible culture. Here it was really warm and inviting and would be welcoming to people of all sorts of backgrounds while here. I interned in a kinetic consulting firm McKinsey here in part so excited to say that a great times are staying in Pittsburgh and being able to explore.
Hi everyone, my name is Sean C UM prior to Tepper. I was a software developer at Ericsson in New Jersey and I grew up outside of Boston. Before that, I came to Tabor because I wanted to be a product manager and tap are being very technology focused. It was the right decision for me and I also just fell in love with the culture. Everybody that I talk to is really, really warm really welcoming and that really resonated with me.
Over the summer I was a product manager at VM Ware in Palo Alto are happy to be here today and to answer any of your questions great thank you. Ann is we begin you know technology and business has just really been intertwined and I think that's something see Muse really you know in a leader in the business and technology and leadership in Analytic. Analytics is the 2 pillars for our program so.
You know, let's let's talk about the leadership. A little bit and how you have worked with our coaches here and kind of.
What's happened in the beginning, I know you take your assessment test and if you've been a part of the leadership certificate program as well would anyone like to just share some insight to that.
Yeah, go ahead, so I love working with accelerate I started working with a couple of coaches just to get a feel for who I was really comfortable with who I got 12 with and I felt that the leadership. There was a really big part of my growth. Add Tavern. There's people that I was able to talk about with some of my weaknesses as a leader and throughout my first and now second year as a student I really seen myself.
Grow as not only a team player, but also a leader as well. And so they've really made a huge impact in? who I am as a person and it's really great working with some really awesome. People here at Tepper.
Yeah, and a hop on to that a little bit. I think it's also a very personalized experience So what Chauncey worked on versus what I worked on were very different things. But we were. We were able to have our needs met while we were working with everyone in the accelerate leadership center, so overall. It's been a really great experience being able to push that forward. I think now being second year students. Some of us are working on the leadership certificate so continuing to really hone in on some skills that we want to take into the business world. Because yes hard skills are very important. But so are those soft skills and this is where we're able to work on those.
Yeah, and you know how about any uhm just insight or share your ideas. It maybe you're sitting there on our web and are like I don't have a strong quantitative background or you know questioning. Maybe you know if this is the right school for them. How do we help those who may not be as strong in Analytics?
I would say probably my number one resources like our other classmates. Uhm I mean, professors are incredible. An RTS are incredibly helpful as well. But the amount of support and assistance that I got when I was going through some of those classes, especially in the core curriculum, which can be. You know definitely rigorous. I found a lot of folks that had expertise in certain areas like jumped to help me get through any homework or any questions that I had that really like stood out to me.
Is still consistent to this day even through second year? Thank you?
So you know that our numbers. You know you see uhm. I think it's important to note that our career services office has met 1 on one counseling with over group had over 4000 meetings and you know they really are invested in our students would anyone like to talk about their experiences and how you've interacted with our Masters Career Center sure so for me, I was trying for both technology and consulting.
I feel so I want to sign up.
Technology anti concept, but for me if I have any questions regarding my meeting. I can email any of the consular in MCC apart from the one that's assigned to me and they're very responsive and really give their time for any last minute questions during my one on one meetings. They clarify all the questions that I might have to prepare me for my TMAY. Another resume related queries that I have so it's you can take advantage of them from your first year Timothy.
End of year second year and they're always, there to help feels it's being available. Coming friend related Federation that you make with them.
I would also say it's incredibly personalized so I have a pretty specific career goal and my counselor has really worked with me one on one to help kind of individualized my own strategy in my own plan for achieving my goals, which I really appreciate.
Anyone want to talk about what industry you're hoping to enter after graduation.
Yeah, so I I guess I'm looking to hop into our stay in consulting after this internship and I've built a really close relationship with both the consulting counselors that we have in the MCC. They both come from very different backgrounds. I think it adds a little bit perspective. There's not a one size fits all that way to get into a certain industry or certain job and so continuing to hone in on your skills and working on the resume the interview questions. All those sorts of things. the FCC really comes in handy there, yeah, and what other events. Can you talk about throughout the year that they may host like I know?
Recruiters come to campus, but what are what are some other things?
That's any any lecture or just yeah, so they work on on campus recruiting in the overall etiquette of how that's going to go. I believe in this spring. They had some tips on how to succeed at your internship so they're definitely providing like before you get your internship during you could like while you're working on your internship and then before you're entering in. They provide all sorts of workshops and seminars to be able to help you really answer any questions that you might have I think on Top of that. They have great firm relationships with companies all over the country, if not the world so.
They're really bringing a vast experience in diverse experience forward so that all students really are able to cater to what they want to do postgrad.
Thank you and as we talk about the diversity here are diverse diversity. Weekend is coming up in a few days so it's something that you know, we really believe just creates a rich environment here at temper so would you please just explain to those on the web and R? How you believe Tepper we, we continue to foster the inclusive community here.
We're actually currently in inclusion week which is the first time we've done this and it's really, really cool 'cause. We got a bunch of people in the community. They are involved in kind of celebrating our differences and where we're all coming from and sort of coming together and learning about each other's cultures and celebrating each other tonight. We have, like a temper's Got Talent event people are going to be doing all kinds of.
Thing so um that's just one example of something that's happening right now it's really fun and I think something that really resonates with me is that the people who are a part of the affinity groups aren't necessarily.
Them selves apart of that affinity group that makes sense. They're just there to support their classmates so for example, for Tupper woman in business. We not only have our female students that we have been stylized for people who are part of the Latin American Business Association. Not everybody on the the club is Latin American and so everybody is super supportive of each other. Whether or not they are actually that's actually part of their background.
But we're all really excited to learn about each other's cultures. Each others backgrounds and that support is really stands out and makes a big difference. Thank you so let's talk about pepper women in business with you know how this? How do you help support the women here on temper?
One thing that I really love about 2:00 if is that it kind of means something different to every person that's involved in it, so for some folks. We hold professional development events that are catered maybe towards women like giving women particular skills on negotiating or learning? How to sort of navigate a predominantly male field. But addition to that. We also have a ton of social events. We have so much fun together and we have the opportunity to really connect outside the classroom. We also hold events with other professional groups so we have like?
Happy hour with different organizations and companies that are coming to campus as well. So it's a really broad kind of value. Add organization that's just really exciting to be apart of.
And I think I talked a little bit about men's allies. But a part of part of twig. There's men's allies where we have our Mail supporters who who listen to some of the challenges we have as women in the workplace and we have these really.
A really difficult, but um necessary conversations in small group chats where we talk about how we can overcome these issues. How men can help and how we can all support each other.
Briefly talk about the leadership conference that happens in February. That's one of your flagship events that you host, yeah, so Leadership Conference is coming February 2020. We hope you all can join us there, but basically it's it's a conference for women and it's designed so that we can talk about different issues right so last year. The theme was around negotiation. And this year. We're looking to focus more so on empowerment and making sure that we feel the mental Wellness. While we're in different situations as well as make sure that we can empower ourselves and others that are involved, so we pull speakers from temper.
Some of them up when they professors that we have as well as external speakers as well, just to hear different perspectives that we face in the business world as well as just in life. So it's always a fun event. We have a lot planned for that day. So we hope that you all can join us in February and come meet us and come to temper.
So here a Tupper I know I've worked pretty closely with Forte as well, and others in my office work with the other diversity organizations. Uhm you know, I I know um. Natasha URL so our Forte liaison. So I'm you know what? What benefits maybe have you gained throughout your time here by being a part of Forte definitely. I think one of the biggest things is as broad and diverse is temporary as it opens the door to being able to interact with women from other business programs.
So we have basically a website there different conversations different threads. I guess that are happening on our website and it's just free for you to be able to engage with others and I think it's a good for him to be able to also professionally develop as well. So I know there are a lot of partnerships at fortune has with different firms and companies and it's another another outlet to have to be able to get secure that internship or secure that full time job so I think apart from the social aspect and of being able to meet others. You're also able to have that professional sense as well. So I think it's just an overall network that you.
Basically are part of and you get to rely on whenever you need it.
I also attended the Forte Women's conference prior to coming to Tepper and I know a lot of our women attend that conference as a way to not only meet some of the women that will be working closely with in the upcoming year but also women from different schools different years different industries. So it's a really good opportunity to meet a whole variety of women who are going through the same journey as you and I believe as part of the conference. There was a mini career fair so.
Is a really low risk opportunity for people to start talking to employers see what it's like to be on the other side and working on your elevator pitch is working on things that you're going to start having to think about a lot as you start your first year and so it was just a really good way to start thinking about those skill sets that you need as an MBA student. Those meet your future classmates and a great thing about that, too, with the master's Career Center as they help you the entire way you're not walking in blind will work on your resume with you they'll work on.
Potential interview questions you feel prepared enough to be able to go to the conference, which is a great benefit as you get a lot of that stuff done over the summer before you actually get to temper.
So at this point, please feel free to begin text typing. I keep saying texting. I apologize typing. Your questions in the chat box and will begin to address them towards the end of the web and R but you know. Let's talk about Pitts Burg moving to Pittsburgh, where where did you move here from India?
Easy for me to have to adjust but Deborah had like Pittsburgh has a lot of places where you want to go. This lot of tourist spots. There's a lot of bad things happening in the downtown if you're interested in that a lot of Museum, which is free for Carnegies. CMU student so you can visit the museums and take advantage of all the facilities near me off and we have a great campus. So if you come here, you would love to see that.
Yeah, I'm just going to, I came from Boston. So it's very it was relatively close for me to transfer 2, but I've been really surprised at how incredibly livable this city is I was also here over the summer so I had the opportunity to really take the time to explore. There's like a festival going on. Like every single weekend an it's an absolute like foodies dream like I still have a really long list of restaurants. I'm trying to check out there's always something to do.
And it's really surprise me like the absolute best way.
Yeah, I was, I'm from Chicago, originally was living in Memphis. Before this and to me. I know sometimes pittsburghers don't like when I say this but it was kind of like coming home to the Midwest. I'm a big Midwestern girl and so for me, it felt like home. Culturally, which was really exciting and I think it is a smaller city compared to a Chicago or New York, but it has a lot of culture and a lot of different neighborhoods to check out a lot of things to be doing where I feel like I look at my list and nothing gets crossed off so I think it definitely has the potential to keep you busy while you're here at temper.
Thank you and I second. The Food I would also say really quickly. It's very easy to get around so like the bus system is really reliable. I live off of like one of the public buses, and I took it all. All the time over the summer and it's really great and reliable so and it's free for us to students. Yeah.
So again uhm you know, please keep sending your questions will get to them shortly and I just want to mention our panelists again. All getting ready to graduate this year's probably let's see what?
Questions do we have here?
So how did anyone we have a good question about the industry tracks and I know that happens in the fall so can anyone speak to that. Did you do 1 this past couple weeks couple weeks ago? Yeah, usually its 1st year? I would just mention really quickly. This is little more niche. But on the energy club. We notice that there wasn't an industry track when we were coming in, so a couple of us just kind of teamed up and created our own.
We got a lot of support from the alumni office. An MCC to reach out to alumni to plan and organize the the whole track and find interesting companies to talk to an end up being incredibly successful in 2 of our first years end up getting offers in going to companies that we actually met with great that's awesome.
Actually, both so student clubs 2 are the arrangements and plan everything but MCC taken huge part of it. Even the MCC counselors go along with us doing it right so that we can interact with the industries in a more closed manner. So it's a really great experience. So I went on the V NT1. The business technology track last year and that was a 5.
It's a long track to Silicon Valley and it was, it was really packed. But it was a really good opportunity to go to all the companies go to the actual campuses interact with some of the alums understand what internships are hiring with the company culture is like and again as the key to mention the MCC or the Masters Career Center counters are there as long alongside your cohort of students so it's a really good opportunity for students who really?
Get to the companies before they start applying and see where they want to end up for the summer and after graduation.
Great thank you. A man I know why I saw a question about um. The online hybrid program and students in other States and certainly we do have students in other states in the online hybrid program an if you want more information. I'm more than happy to connect with you afterwards as well.
Um thank you keep the questions going.
So how about some advice for incoming students come from you know, another entering into another country but how about just in general like some advice for some incoming first year students. Maybe what you wish you had known at the time.
I can answer for both so I can hear from India. It was a huge change for me and the other classmates from India and Latin America, another.
Countries that we have, we generally have a combined with a waterproof everyone communicate. We are part of the.
New students for our first. Yes, we were part of the WhatsApp group, so everyone share the details at the phase. We kind of have a list of what to do care take care of what to bring from the other country that's not available. Maybe USA things that you're used to in your country and you're not you won't find it in this country So what? So when we will have load from both at first years and years and it will let you see.
There's a lot of support, he will get once you join the group, so don't worry about it and you will be good to go.
I think something that I wish I had kind of known or taken to heart was that everyone is coming in and everyone's new right. I had kind of felt a little bit awkward like walking into that first day trying to meet everyone, but everyone is in the same exact spot and I think you notice that people are excited to meet each other and people like start to have great conversations incredibly quickly.
Yeah, I think one thing that everyone emphasized. It took me a little bit to really grasp was you get a PhD in time management being in an MBA program that is probably the most real thing, that I've ever heard because you were juggling class clubs social gathering social things as well. So it's like trying to figure out where you're going to piece it all together and I think you eventually figure it out or would like to thank you. Figure it out, but definitely stick close to your Google call or I Cal or whatever you use because that thing is probably kept me going from place to place.
And we have a question about um international travel and study abroad and I know. Um study abroad is a component of some of the capstones, but also the spring tracks and is anyone doing one of those study abroad cast out. I am I'm really excited. I will be going to Germany in the spring, so leading up to. That's going to be mini 4, so starting mid March for a month until mid April and then we'll come back and.
Do our presentations doing finals during finals week in May, but leading up to that there's going to be a capstone course. That's preparing you for the study abroad program. And so and then a lot of people traveled before and after the actual study abroad program because it's spring break right before so people like to take advantage of that break up and then last year. I also attended the Japan truck, which was during spring break.
My first year that was student led by um. It was led by some of our Japanese students. So there are locals. They live around the area. So we really got to experience your pan and sort of the local list size. We did do touristy things but we went to all the.
Although local places another really good food places that people have really enjoyed when living in Japan.
Yeah, I think the breakdown. I actually wasn't able to go and meet the cultural tracks and I'm not studying abroad. But I think the cool thing is, is there are 2 opportunities primarily during the year in a more formal setting right so shots you mentioned the cultural track, that typically happens your first year during spring break. So I know there was an Israel track there was uh.
Chip or Japan track I think Brazil, Brazil. Maybe Columbia Columbia. So it's yeah, student light and kind of just like a group of people just kind of had out there together and then for the formalized capstones. Its Hong Kong in Germany. As of right now, so it's pretty fun. I think to be able to go and be a part of that, so yeah.
Would anyone like to share UM like their favorite experience. So far that tupper. Maybe it was. Japan traffic here. It's always very popular ones.
I think this is a little bit more professional focused but I really enjoyed being part of case competitions at other business schools. So I made like a team with other Tepper students and we had the opportunity to travel to another school meet. Some other MBAs Network and work on like a really, really interesting problem and that also added a really interesting element to my resume and I pretty much been asked about it in every single interview that I've had so far, so yeah.
I think for me, it's a collection of moments that primarily revolve around the people here. I think the culture temper is super strong and I don't know what the secret sauces, but somehow every year. It seems to really workout and I think it's just a product of being here at temper so for me. It's the people in the culture. I think that really make this experience what it is.
So just some upcoming events. Uhm you know, we have pepper talks and we're in select cities in the USA in a few weeks and then our decision deadlines on Round 2 appears to be fast approaching and then um you'll see as well. Rounds Brianne for we don't have rolling admissions here, so the decision date is when you will be notified.
Other ways to engage with pepper or you know, I really encourage you to look at our website. In the NBA ambassador page. I think you'll find that they're more than willing to help you and just you know reach out and help you learn a little bit more about pepper and their experiences here. We have a couple of videos with the NBA journey. Of course, you know you're more than welcome to attend campus visits. They are currently running up until about like the first week.
Of December of course will start again. Uh after the new year is well. You know if you have any questions, please reach out to our office again. My name is Gina Chickity. I'm the only Gina in the office so you'll find me on the website and you're more than welcome to reach out to me as well. and I wish you the best of luck. Thank you everyone.
