And the purpose of today's webinars to help you understand the distinct benefits of the Tepper MBA Cup curriculum and diverse community by hearing directly from our current students today will be focusing on the experience of our European students.
I'm joined today by several uh students in MBA program who are excited to share their experiences. Answer your questions do. We have some topics to get it started and we'll do our best to get as many questions as we can at the end.
So without further ado, I will go ahead and let our current students introduced themselves. We Unfortunately are not joined by Caroline suit. Today, the first picture you see on your screen. But if any of you are interested in these parts. I'm on an hybrid program, I can be sure to connect your care line.
Let's go with the picture just introduction right from where we came from yes. Hi I'm Micah and I am from Germany. But I'm also by national Belgian citizen but grew up and lived in Germany. Before I came to temper I worked my background is in the humanities and I worked in international hydration for a long time.
OK. Sorry. There was a well thank you.
And came to temper because I wanted to transition a pivot into a new industry in a new role in also wanted to come to this country too.
Work and live here at long-term an my experience so far has been great this past summer. I spent at Fisher Price in turning in their marketing division and took a lot of learnings an experience away from that.
All right, thanks Mike uh? How everyone my name is Danielle. I'm also firminy also second year full time. I'm a student here at Tupper Uhm. I actually moved to ask about 4 years ago, so I was working here in Pitts burg. In fact before joining temper. So my background is entirely intact. I study computer science in undergrad and Masters and specialized in cryptography for my PhD so I was working as a research scientist Prior to joining temperan. I wanted to pivot into product management and tag and so I spend my summer interning at Amazon and Boston, with AWS.
As a part management technical a manager and I'll be joining them full time as well post graduation.
An I'm arena, I'm originally from Ukraine. I moved to US in 2002 as a teenager. So I've been in use for awhile, um before I lived in Houston and before coming to Tapper. I worked an oil and gas in corporate social responsibility. I wanted to make a switch into tech world. So Tepper was the perfect match for me and the summer. I interned with the HP Hewlett-Packard in Houston, so we'll see what happens next.
Thank you all so much for taking the time out of your busy schedules to contribute to our perspective students today.
As I began this presentation take a moment to think about the dramatic information transformation of business due to exponential leaps in technology think about driverless cars. Apple Pay big coin different things like that also consider the amount of data being produced has increased massively. There's no denying that the landscape of business has changed and there is one thing that is certain is going to continue to do so. The temperature school is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this opportunity.
And we train our students. We need at the intersection of business and technology when I say that word is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this, I mean that you are able to access the higher Carnegie Mellon University Network. You're able to take classes with world class engineers and experts in their field in a cross collaborative environment all over their CMU campus from in classroom to outside the classroom. There are boundless opportunities here for you at the deficit.
It wasn't all that long ago that you guys were in the perspective. Students choose thinking about the NBA and researching programs to attend can a couple of you share some insights into? How do you believe the focus on leadership and analytics helps Tepper students stand apart and how is pepper helps you to enhance these skills?
I think I think it's learning that one is Daniela. I'm so having a rather analytical kind of background is actually really interesting question for me because I decided to join Tepper actually not to like keep diving into a kind of that part of my skills, but to kind of round out my profile with everything business related and really more leadership side something. I really appreciated typer when I start researching is for instance, that we have the accelerate center here that works with you 1 on one through your ship coaching. There's something called leadership certification, which I was really excited about that allows you to kind of.
Really hondo skulls and just dive deep on that part of your profile when it comes to the lip tickle slides. We missed it out to me when I sort of recruiting last summer was that if you look at especially in the tech industry whether it's you know the big tech companies. Google Amazon, Facebook. You name it or any of the smaller ones all the way down to really hot startups when you come into the room with a Tupper MBA, education and that degree none of those companies ever.
Even doubt that you have is a logical skills. They know that type of curriculum were put through they know the type of conversation pieces that we do, and in that sense, I think it really gives us an edge when it comes to recruiting in those industries, which goes beyond Tech and other industries as well.
I'll definitely echo with Daniela said here this is Mike again. Um even though my background is obviously very different than I do not have any analytical skills before I came here like that was part of the reason to come here just to get that exposure to dive deep into data and get really analytical even though that was very challenging. At times, but being able to live through that and to know you can do that also gives you so much more confidence when you go into your internships when you then later going into your full time job to know that I can do this because I've been trained.
An educated here, so well to the degree that nothing can really throw you an even if it does you have a great support network that you can rely on among your classmates or alums that will always always be there to help you out.
So that definitely also motivated my decision to come here, yeah, I'll just go with Danielle and Micah said. Um the recruiters come to Tepper looking for those skills, but also it's OK don't learn all the aspects of Analytics. I like Michael said. We have a great support network and resources after school or during school during their internship that you can tap into.
Obviously, the academic experience is a big part of the MBA program. But so too, is your work with the master screw singer for both internship and full-time improving.
But some of you speak to your involvement with the MCC in terms of job search preparation being? How does the MCC support? View and achieving your posting vehicles?
Very fast start us off with the general process is Danielle again. What happens once you get on campus. In fact, even before you get on campus is you get assigned an MC career counselor, so this is a dedicated person based on the type of role that you're looking to recruit in the type of Industry, you're looking to recruit in with that, you will get go through a different steps like a resume via a mock interview and you know really anything else that you need in order to feel prepared to start the whole recruiting journey an process.
We also layout for you at the timeline that's typical for your industry and roll because that is very different depending on which while you're recruiting for it really helps you to kind of I guess keep a call mine if that makes sense in going into. That process and knowing where your CNA and kind of where are the things or feel so you can improve on later on, I last thing I'll say about that? Too is a big part of the recruiting process here is something we call on campus recruiting so the MCC works with you know you probably have the numbers better job I like I have.
Convert 100 S Recruiters in companies out there where we host corporate presentations on campus. In fact, I'm one of the pier career assistance in a Mike works. There, as well, where we have students help out in organizing those presentations and that's really a direct kind of access to recruiters and also alarms that keep coming back to Tupper 'cause. They really believe in recruiting those school.
I yeah, there's not much to it for my side. I have a really great relationship with my MCC counselor to the fact that I can go in anytime even if I don't have an appointment, but just like before hand. We like Oh are you there OK cool. So we sit down and, like our relationship has evolved beyond their career search. But I feel so comfortable with all the help that I've gotten from my counselor that is just this personal relationship that has evolved that I see all throughout pepper wherever you go the.
CC is just one example and by being appear career system. You also get more exposure to the other counselors, which not necessarily just because of that. You can get that also buy it just going in and talking to them and they always have an open ear for you and they're so happy to help you out, and connect you to alums or whatever it is that you need so you really have all the support that you need you just need to go and ask for it like it doesn't automatically come to you. That's something I always want to put out there also have to be proactive in searching that out.
Can you talk about that experience yeah? Absolutely uhm actually I've been I've visited one myself? When I just started last year. So I'm all of our student almost all of our freshman student clubs organized so called recruiting tracks that happens between many one mini 2, which is like our I guess sober break in the end of October. Typically, an what happens there is a week long or less office actually going out and visiting companies that has been organized in a month ahead of time it will often times kind of driven by alums at those companies that really want to.
Have students come in and learn about what the company does what is the environment like and truly actually see the offices and the place where you could be working whether it's your internship or full-time experience. So I didn't want to Silicon Valley last year, which happens every year organized by the business and Technology Student Club and in fact, I let the one that just happened now through the marketing Cup, which was a tech marketing tracks so geared towards product management. Part marketing management roles in Tech and we mentioned New York City for a few days.
And Yeah, it's an awesome experience and uh really unprecedented experience and opportunity for students to get you know the company get to know the alarms there, I guess you know, people that work there and just network in a way that wouldn't be a possible otherwise and just really puts also your resumes on the Top of the pile if you decide to apply those companies.
Yeah, I would say the business in technology track class fold to settle Silicon Valley was key for me in searching for internships because you get to see the actual culture of the company while you're there, which is something that you can really do just by reading about the culture, so it can actually save you a lot of time and applying because he can say. I really don't see myself here. So why am I going to spend my time applying to this job or the opposite and you can get really excited about the company and kind of narrow down your your.
Search 100% agree with that I also want to point out there. Most tracks are happening during fall break. But then in January, there at least 2 taking place as well. There's another tech trek to Seattle and then there will be media technology. Sorry median entertainment check to LA to get more into that industry and I think those are great opportunities just to make connections with companies with alums in like arena set just to get a feel for what it's like to be there and can you connect with it or can you not?
And then you can move on from there.
Right but you also need those answers there.
So one of the terrorist schools values is diversity of thought because we believe that nurse community creates a richer and more robust learning environment? How do you all believe the Tepper school fosters Dan Clusive community and how do you think that you've been included in this community as a European soon.
Um we just had diversity weekend and last week, the first inclusion. We get pepper, which I think shows you how important of a topic it is here at the school and there were just so many events going on to go beyond your everyday life here. It's the one thing that stood out to me that I remember was a thing called unfiltered conversations where you just talk to your peers around you that you interact with every day. Or maybe people, you don't really talk to that often.
And talk about things that are not recruiting that are not Business School that are about you as a person maybe where you come from? How do you value certain things and it just goes so much deeper beyond the surface level that we are on every day and Billy Foster that connection and community amongst each other. We also had an Italian shell.
We're a diverse group of people just show showcase their skills and what that good at or maybe even what they're not so good at and they're just trying to get better and put themselves out there and another thing that I really remember fondly was international fast last year in the spring where we could sign up to present foods from our home country and just share.
Those who is with our classmates and maybe talk more about where we're from, and what's so special about certain food or culture. Uhm I just?
There's so much to it an you learn something new from your classmates every single day is settings, where they come from and their cultural checks, taking place as well. I went to Japan earlier this year, which was completely organized by the Japanese students.
Yeah, I've never thought I would do this and I've learned so many things through their eyes and I saw their country through their eyes and not just as a tourist and that's an invaluable experience that I'm not sure I could have gotten anywhere else. For me, I actually plan to apply in 2019. So I would have been the class of 2021, but I came to diversity weekend in November of 2017 and I enjoyed the people. I'm out so much that I kind of hurried up and took my gmat and started a year earlier than I originally planned and I feel really good about it. I feel like I'm part of a great cohort so I'm happy I'm here.
Yeah, totally I probably think my friend I mean, I said already um but one thing I'll add to you as especially coming in as an international student can be intimidating right because you come here and you on Top of just Business School in the NBA and all of those I guess adventures coming out years also about just getting used to a totally different environment. Whether it's culturally whether it's language whether it's you know anything else. Regardless, the fact that I've lived here number of years and it's the same for carinas well. It's still a totally new kind of chapter in your life right and knowing that you have other students around you that just like you.
You know, kind of left everything behind and came through like Business School and live in Pitts Burg is a very comforting feeling to have and having their community around us. I think that's really enrich my experience personally last thing I'll touch on here, too, is the student clubs and we've mentioned it here in there already are a big part of our I guess social life and professional life and just life in general, a temper and I think that's also a big part of why it really creates a diverse inclusive community for us. There's out and ally, which monitors for instance, really involved with.
For women in business actually we just got awarded one of our alums, um now. Let me suggest graduated last year got awarded 540 foundation for starting in men as allies chapter as one of the only business schools that has it which is really, really awesome effort. Nothing really shows our efforts in that direction. In general that's an awesome subway club screwed such a rich opportunity for leadership and growth outside of the classroom as well. I know many of you have been involved in multiple.
Alarms but let's just start the discussion by talking about some of the activities or clubs that were very relevant to you at the beginning of your time here and the clubs that you felt a connection with that, you think some European students might as well.
I'm going to Internet impact because it's something that I think especially coming from Europe, where sustainability an all these other buzzwords that I can think of right now.
Just more ingrained in your day-to-day life and it isn't as much. He ran just to get that opportunity and met impact is doing a really amazing job with that. They just want chapter of the year because they're super engagement is so much going on here and I think that's one thing right in the beginning, I made me feel comfortable with like this is one of the niche is that I want to explore more often. It just gives you that connection with classmates that you might not be in the same class with and then you go to club events and you connect with more people about something that you really care about.
And along those same lines goes out now light, which for me has a very special place in my heart. Uhm we started a rupaul's drag race, Fantasy League last year where we would watch to show together every week, which is a super bonding experience and you've really dived into that culture, which I couldn't before because it just isn't that visible in Europe. I would say or at least it's not commercialized in the same way until it was just a couple months ago and.
As a result, there would be like lip sync parties and watch parties and you get so close together and you can talk about a show and there's this bot these bonding moments that I myself got really into it and I had to dress up in drag earlier this year to lip sync against my roommate because we both look fantastic because we both won the Fantasy League and it was just such a new and unique experience and it really drove me outside of my comfort zone, but in the best way possible, and the things that I learned it took away from that, if it would happen for the club and the initiatives that happen going on here.
Wouldn't just have happened and just drove me as a person. So much further in my personal development. An that I can bring with me to recruiting which is another story. But I'll just leave it at that. For now, so I'm on president of Tepper care so they're kind of a I guess the right arm of not impact so coming from corporate social responsibility community outreach was really important to me and that's what Tepper cares does will go out into the community will clean the streets or plans trees.
Or will cook dinner at a local family house, um in Pittsburgh. So it kind of helps you get to know the city. A little bit more. And then gives you a buns and opportunity between the classes because that's where first years and 2nd years where we get to interact together and do something that's not necessarily school or business related but it feels really good.
Yeah, totally plus one temper cares. I actually went out too. I'm like walk. Some dogs that are in an animal shelter and like wash them and that was the best 2 hours of.
I wanna see my life, but but I personally had it, I guess farm relationship with twig. When I just got to check where I haven't got admitted because what happens is if you report a fellow which I'm sure will talk about later as well. You get to go to the party leadership conference, which actually happens over the summer so before you even get to campus appear in the full time program and we had a huge representation serving and I in fact that even before we got to campus because we went out to Atlanta. Yeah, it changes every year so the city changes around.
Based on the conferences and that was a huge bonding experience I met you know over 19 of my fellow women here in the program and that was a really, really great way I guess starting your MBA experience.
Alright another great segue, Daniela like a thing I planned it wanted to make sure those listening in our familiar with some of the key partners. We have community so starting at the Top left. We have the consortium that promotes underrepresented minorities students in business. I've been going to the right is the 40 foundation that Piniella was just talking about the promotion women in business and particularly getting an MBA.
And then we are partnered with military NBA I don't know if any of you out there listening or USN station in Europe or not, but we do partner with the military and VA foundation that we also are an MLT partner as well as a reaching out and be a partner in reaching out NBA is for our LGBTQ plus population who are interested in an MBA so if any of you are interested in any of these organizations do feel free to reach out to us.
But I wanted to ask our students here can you share some of the benefits and opportunities you gain through any peace organizations for any outstanding opportunities here seen from any classes.
I can talk about for a tea. I'm little more depth. So I mentioned the conference earlier as well as obviously that's a huge benefit of having or being Offerte School is that you get to get to go through that Leadership Conference get to meet your classmates early and also get to meet other students that are about to start in part of the I guess NBA journey from around the world. So it's not only you ask based actually something interesting. I guess we'll anecdote that happened there on the Forte stage until for Contacts in like 250 people in the room in the audience.
And then they bring in women executives from all over the place in terms of industry and roll and one other woman on stage was Lori Heinel, who's actually a tupper along and she's now the W chief investor at State Street so in the finance side when she's based in Boston and I happened to run into her again. When I did my internship and we actually not talking 'cause. She was at 4:00 today and I was there and I was really inspired by what she said. When she was on stage there and you know, we're still in touch so replying to organize morlum events. Once I joined the Boston community full time, but I think it's kind of goes to show that.
Above are I guess reach in terms of loans, but also especially women alums is really great and I guess very strong in terms of the bonding and the the way they feel about you know temper and coming back out there in connection with these types of events and diversity partners that we have. Yeah, if you haven't yet definitely joined for it. A They have a lot of great resources. They have a program that will help you study for the GMAT or GRE if you haven't taken that yet definitely gmat. Not sure about Jerry but definitely gone their website. You'll also get a free application to a lot of schools.
If you join their program. I think they feed to join this very small so it's not that uhm and then last thing as Daniela mentioned will get connected to women from other schools as well, which is a great network and scholarships do they provide scholarships. I can talk about Ramba. I am very strong LF the LGBT community so because I'm on the board about an ally. I was able to go not just to the Leadership Conference but also to a summit in April.
Um to learn more about leadership in that in that world Ann. I met so many amazing people from other schools across the country and I made bonds and connections within 2 days of being there that have been strong ever since. And then I got to go to the conference in October and met these people again and but also unique opportunities to recruit at companies that may not come to campus that or maybe just a little trickier to get into an through that I found opportunities. I just came back from interviewing with a couple of companies.
And I know that that's unique because of the rhombi network at super supportive when you there. You have all your classmates with you. You are rooting for each other. There are many great talks and panels to attend you also have support from the MCC again. So I had interviews. Just come up while I was there and I could go and be like, Oh my God. I don't know what to do because I have so little time to prepare and they would go through it sit with you and be like. Here's what you can do with this, you know everything that you need reassurance and just prep you to do your best.
And get the best out of it, but drama is a whole great community.
I can never really finish sentences diesel just leave it at that number of our clubs have ally portion to the chapter for example, we spoke earlier about the men's allies. A portion of the temporal women in business and out now. It is another area where if you don't necessarily identify any of these populations. There's still a way for you to get involved.
Install in allied to these causes as well so don't think just because you don't fit into these buckets. There's not a place for you in these organizations as well.
So we want to get your questions so please start submitting those in the chat box. But one thing that is probably on your mind. It's moving to Petsburgh and pursuing an MBA and what the city has offered to its students and some of you talk about her transition Pitts Burg and have you taken advantage of the city.
I love Pittsburgh, so I lived in Texas for 16 years and I love Texas. Houston is great. It's a big city. But being a European I kind of missed before seasons. I kind of missed the smaller town where you don't necessarily need the card to get around and Pitts Burg was a perfect fit. It's not a very expensive city. So it's very affordable. Compared to some of the other bigger US cities and it has everything a big city.
Would offer just in the smaller, more Queens package uhm? I went to New York, a couple weeks ago to see a friend an when I got back to Pittsburgh like New York was fun. It was great, but when I got back. It just it just felt like home and felt comfortable. It felt cozy you know where to go. The traffic is not as crazy. Everything is just he ran the rivers are beautiful. The trees are beautiful definitely a fan of Pittsburgh. I I'm going to say kind of touch on to that.
Um every time I go away from Pitts Burg and I'm like I mean, the city. The city is fine. It's not my favorite. But it's a great place to live, especially for your MBA. But every time I come back. I'm so excited just to be reunited with my classmate because I know there's this community. There are people I live in a building that also I think 6 or 8 other classmates of us living so apartment above and below me and my roommate other classmates and then to the left and the right there, so it's full of people and I can walk around the corner.
Anne I know I'm going to run into at least one person on my way to wherever I go. An I just really love that feeling of not being on my own and coming home to something familiar.
And just you know being part of that community, but also Pittsburgh as a city is has its charms. It definitely has seasons. Although I would say we skip fall this year because that just kind of went away. But you have cute little neighborhoods that you can go to shady side where most of us probably live is such a walkable nice neighborhood has restaurants. You go to another neighborhood for great restaurants. But you can also just hop on a bus or someone can drive you somewhere if you don't have a car Ann you hang out.
In all the other neighborhoods around shady side and there's so much to do in terms of restaurants and bars uhm nail salons. If you're into that Broadway comes to Pittsburgh, they go. Yeah, we recently went to Mingus Music Hall, which was organized by one of our clubs and I don't know what else I haven't really explored that much about Pittsburgh, seeing students you get access to the public transport buses, too, so college is definitely doable without a car.
Cortana I need to feel like you need to move a car to the USS or buy one at least 1 temporarily while you're here trying to find a roommate who has a car if you don't that was my strategy.
Anything else on Pitts Burg has anything in particular been great about that. You think would be good for a European student transitions. Dus and Pitts Burg for the first time Pittsburgh so first exposure filling in the USC advice. For those students out there, honestly in my opinion system now again moving from Germany.
I think the best way of putting it is pittsburghers is very easy city to settle into especially if you've never lived in the US before or anywhere abroad really think Pittsburgh is easy to understand in terms of you know what are the neighborhoods. It's really safe everywhere. So you can't really go wrong in terms of you know where you choose your housing, especially around CMU and CMU is everywhere right. So, your as John mentioned already like you or I guess student ID is kind of your entry card wherever you go and I mean that both has the bus pass, but also metaphorically.
So one thing I wanted to touch on is Pittsburgh as a city is a thriving tech hub, which you may not know unless you've been here before so since we have such great universities like seeing you here. There are a bunch of startups here less than us from students from engineering segment, but also others and every other starter was a CMU spinoff so even if you choose to venture little bit out of the temporal bubble as we like to call it most people know somebody who knows somebody who knows you because you go to CMU and I think that it really is.
Part of the I guess composition at the community in Pittsburgh and general outside of that personally. I think the people in Pittsburgh are super super friendly so even if you choose to drive and you've never driven in the USA. That's also no problem. If you don't know how stop signs work in the Pittsburgh left and the Pittsburgh left, but absolutely plus. One everything that was said already there. A lot of different things to explore. But even if you just stay in shady side. It's very comfortable very easy way I guess I'm flipping if you want.
To be doing your MBA here in particular, yeah, I think it's a perfect size city for an MBA. It's not too big but it's not too small so you don't have to stay within the community. But you can if you choose so and you'll still have enough things to do and fun facts about Pitts Burg and has the most bridges in the USA City apparently.
All right, so we're nearing the end of our conversation here, so this slide is just again. Today give you put a face to the name that you've been hearing and just wanted to take the time to think about all our panelists.
